Luke 8: 30 Jesus then asked him, “What is your name?” And he said, “Legion,” for many demons had entered him. 31 And they begged him not to command them to depart into the abyss.

These demons had been caught red-handed by the Son of God, whom they recognized immediately. Incidentally, this account shows that these spiritual beings can possess a human body and, furthermore, that multiple demons can reside in the same physical space. We also learn from what followed that demons can possess animals (pigs in this case).

Seeing Jesus struck a chord of fear in these demons that almost makes you feel sorry for them! They are terrified of Jesus because he possesses the authority to instantaneously sentence them to a premature incarceration in the dreaded abyss. This is their worst nightmare. So much for the idea that demons are natives of Hell. They view Hell as a prison to be avoided at all costs.

In Daniel 10, demons are described as having authority over particular geographic locations and are even named for the region they oversee. For example, the “Prince of Persia [Iraq]” and “Prince of Greece” are identified as individual demons.

So, demons do not live in Hell, at least not by choice. But they will become inmates of that prison in the future. They seem aware of this, as evidenced by their terrified question:
